The title and parts of the plot are a reference to the 1997 essay "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" by American writer David Foster Wallace that describes his experiences on a cruise.
Less than six months after his death, Doherty audaciously returned to where Mark Blanco died, to record a promotional video for the Babyshambles song "The Lost Art of Murder", a reference to the 1827 essay On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts, by Thomas De Quincey – one of Blanco's favourite writers.
This essay became an integral part of Persecution and the Art of Writing and far from an obscure relic of an interest in things Jewish and medieval, Strauss's reference to this essay forms a decisive part of his argument in Natural Right and History.
He was also an enthusiastic baseball fan and sabermetrician, and made frequent reference to the sport in his essays.

As it turns out, the essay does make clarifying reference to "The Unforgiven".
But her essay made no reference to the fact already made public by the Standard that her publisher Simon & Schuster had reached a financial settlement with one of her sources shortly after the book appeared in 1987.
