Homer dreams of being on "the planet of the doughnuts", which is reminiscent of the film Planet of the Apes, and when aboard the submarine, refers to one of the crew members as Mr. Sulu, a reference to the character in Star Trek.
His playing was uncategorisable, what his fellow-professionals call a "bastard style" without the slightest personal reference to the character of this modest, funny, erudite and gifted man.
(That's a reference to the character who acts the "conscience" of Pinocchio, in the Walt Disney version of the story. I had to look it up).
They "feel a bit too Gordon Gekko to me," a reference to the character in the 1987 film "Wall Street" played by the actor Michael Douglas.
