As a child she gazes with "rapture" at a "great amphora of artificial tea roses in yellow and red, far more beautiful than the dog roses on the briars".
This response is triggered by the plant's perception via the phytochrome pathway of a decreased red : far red ratio, the result of red light being absorbed by the chlorophyll of surrounding plants (Sawers et al., 2005).
Two enclosures were constructed to simulate forest understorey light quality and quantity (2.5 % of full sun = 50 µmol m−2 s−1; red:far red (R FR) = 0.25) achieved with dye-impregnated films (PANTHER 20; Lee et al. 1996) and shade cloth placed over the frames.
Four pairs of heteroblastic and homoblastic species in genera Hoheria, Aristotelia, Pseudopanax and Melicope were grown in simulated full sunlight (100%% of light, red:far red ratio (R FR) = 1.25) or in simulated forest understorey shade (5%% of full sunlight, R FR ratio = 0.25) in a glasshouse.
The air relative humidity is similar in these two sites, but the montane site is more shaded at the understorey level than the sea-level site, and the montane site has a lower photosynthetically active radiation and red : far red ratio (Maciel-Silva et al. 2012).
Since light is required for seed germination of many species and most of them are in addition sensitive to spectral composition, especially to the ratio Red : Far Red (R : FR; 660 : 730 nm; Bewley and Black 1994), it would be then reasonable to suspect that abaxial anthocyanins may play a role in avoidance of germination of seeds from other potential competitor plants.

We analyzed the EstC population in four different light conditions (white, blue, red, far-red) and darkness.
In the next generation, all the mutant candidates were retested in blue, red, far-red and dark conditions.
