Our integrative studies reveal the recurrent evolution of troglomorphism in a perhaps unexpected geographic region, at surprisingly deep time depths, and in sometimes surprising habitats.

Faced with the recurrent evolution of resistance to pesticides and drugs, the scientific community has developed theoretical models aimed at identifying the main factors of this evolution and predicting the efficiency of resistance management strategies.

Since antibiotics came into general use in the 1950s, medical research has had to confront the recurrent evolution of resistance to most antibiotics used in hospitals against major microbial pathogens.

By pointing to a developmental process underlying lines of least resistance constituted by main directions of intra-population variation, it opens a challenging view regarding the interpretation of recurrent evolution of even strikingly divergent morphologies.

Alternatively, however, our results suggest that recurrent evolution of a similar morphology might not systematically be the signature of parallel selection, but of evolution along lines of least resistance, possibly a side-effect of the selection for another trait (for instance a size increase on islands, e.g. [45]).

The C4 NADP-me being expressed in chloroplasts probably constrained its recurrent evolutions from the only plastid nadpme lineage and this common starting point limited the number of evolutionary paths toward a C4 optimized enzyme, resulting in genetic convergence.

The diverse instances discussed here represent only a subset of the known cases of repeated evolution at the genome level that have been found largely serendipitously, suggesting that recurrent patterns of genome evolution are widespread.

Using this framework, we next review some of the major known cases (or classes) of recurrent genomic evolution (summarized in table 1), beginning with the illustrative case of reductive genome evolution (RGE).

The massive accumulation of comparative genomic data due to recent large-scale sequencing projects [1] can help test whether a putatively general pattern in a species is unique or is recurrent in evolution.
