Skov-3 cells and MSC interact in a paracrine manner by inducing reciprocal growth factor expression including IL-6, VEGF, HGF and TGF-β (Figure 4C and Figure S4).
It suggests that once cells extravasate out of the primary tissue they genetically/epigenetically express migratory and adhesion molecules as a consequence of genetic instability and selection, which in turn facilitates their adhesion and survival in tissues that express the reciprocal growth factor or adhesion molecule [ 4].
Limiting axonal degeneration has the added benefit of possibly prohibiting the spread of further oligodendrocyte and myelin damage proximal and distal to the initial axonal lesion due to the maintenance of reciprocal growth factor-dependent mechanisms, with the potential for profound neurological benefit [ 2].
