Under usual conditions, dialysis nurses are exposed to patients after they have received modality education from physicians and predialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) clinic nurses.
Of 1741 patients who attended the CKD clinic, 299 patients who started dialysis after receiving modality education met study criteria.
Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) from a single centre who started dialysis after receiving modality education were included in this study.
Besides, the survival benefit of earlier RRT initiation was also observed in the patients who started with CRRT (RR 0.80, 95% CI 0.66 0.95), but not in those who received mixed modalities (RR 1.01, 95% CI 0.86 1.17) or IHD (RR 1.15, 95% CI 0.66 2.01) (p = 0.43 for interaction) (Fig. 4; Additional file 1: Fig. S3).
However, 23 of these patients received therapeutic modalities in addition to chemotherapy.
Second, our patients received different modalities as dictated by their individual hemodynamics.
Survivors received all modalities of diagnostic imaging at significantly higher rates than controls.
Approximately 40% of the study participants received both modalities over the course of their illness as their hemodynamic status changed (Table 1).
The highest number of patients received 4 modalities (N = 55), including acupuncture/Chinese medicine (51.9%), manipulation therapy (17.3%), mind/body techniques (7.7%), integrative medicine consult (7.7%), exercise (7.7%), yoga (1.9%), and alternative medical systems therapy (5.8%).
Some received one modality of treatment while most (34.7% in 2009 and 43.6% in 2010) received a combination of physiotherapy modalities or techniques.
