But most of these tech-savvy diners have another way of recording such ecstatic eating experiences beyond the familiar social networks: a new smartphone application called Recco that is, at its core, a recommendation service for foodies with short attention spans.
Users of Recco follow friends to view their recommendations or can follow "experts" — a select group of bar owners, celebrity chefs and video food bloggers.
The app's emphasis, with the iPhone's GPS feature highlighting nearby sites with pop-up flags, is on the local, even as Recco has users spread across several continents.
"Recco is so off the radar," Mr. Cortez said.
Located at the intersection of the hottest cultural trends — food, social networking and app design — Recco draws on the ingredients of Twitter, Yelp, Facebook and Foursquare to create what Mr. Cortez and his team hope will be the newest killer app.
