The sleep of reason produces monsters, warned Goya – but those monsters are prodigiously creative.
The inscription on one etching reads, "El Sueño de la razón produce monstruos" ("The sleep of reason produces monsters").
This self-described "laughing for no reason" produces real, contagious laughter and is fun for the self-selected participants, but its claimed medicinal benefits remain a matter of conjecture.
"The sleep of reason produces monsters" (Plate 43), which typically appears in art history textbooks surveying the period, depicts the artist with his head cradled, face down in his arms, resting on a table with his drawing tools around him.
I was also thinking of Goya's marvellous etching "The Sleep of Reason Brings Forth Monsters," to which he attached the caption "Fantasy abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters: united with her, she is the mother of the arts and the origin of their marvels".
The externalization of reason produced a historical sequence, including the forms of alienated life.
