There's a certain type of reader that you don't ever want to write for.
"If you find, reader, that you are tired of Lucy looking for her glasses," Segal writes, "think how tiresome it is for her".
If you are saying to the reader that you can enter the thoughts of any character and can comment on the action or events in your own voice, then any deliberate withholding of information counts as a black mark.
There may be nothing formally inventive in this kind of classical technique, but, in the hands of a master, it's smooth and satisfying, and I suggest, dear reader, that you gaze upon it, because it's all but gone in today's moviemaking world.
I know as a long-term Guardian reader that you have a problem with my football club, but two whole pages of obituary about perhaps our most famous fan (26 August), and not even one sentence about his relationship with Chelsea FC?
If you have worn numerous hats in your previous job this can be reflected as a real plus on your CV if you can prove to the reader that you have been successful in the different areas; especially if you have driven through some really strong commercial results, like making or saving the company money.
I'm blessed with wonderful editors, here and in books, but sometimes where you need to go is not where your draft is signalling to a reader that you're heading.
