"I never read 'The Corrections.' I have talked about it many times as if I did.
It is a requirement that all journalists read the corrections and learn from them.
If you read the corrections to that report, you see that ALEC and/or its clients went over the piece with a fine-toothed comb to find anything that they could attack; sure, you can't prove that Corrections Corporation of America inspired the law, or that ALEC lobbied for it.
You could read "The Corrections" as a conventional realist saga of multigenerational family dynamics -- that's how the publisher spins it -- and love's mutating mysteries, with just enough novel-of-paranoia touches so Oprah won't assign it and ruin Franzen's street cred.
"Have you read 'The Corrections'?" he asked, laughing.
In an era of unprecedented restaurant din, "Have you read 'The Corrections'?" was the only overheard remark of the three-hour meal.

If we had an egregious error of fact in an article, we might choose to put the label Correction Appended at the top just to make sure readers went to the end and read the correction: "Greg Brock retired from The Times; he was not fired".
Even so, the over-riding thought in my head when reading The Corrections was a simpler one: this is fun.
In the interests of accuracy, I should point out that Franzen has softened his pessimism a little in subsequent interviews, and one might also retort that the work obviously does matter; people are surely reading The Corrections and Wolf Hall and Freedom and Bring Up the Bodies, not simply waiting for Franzen to appear on Letterman or Mantel on Loose Women.
