This developmental programme, firstly reactivated to control the inflammatory response and to heal the injured tissue, is corrupted in the context of chronic inflammation and cancer, favouring the survival of injured or malignant cells and stimulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the tumour mass or in the organ interstitial space.
