Worse yet, in the last weeks of the US election campaign, according to an analysis by Buzzfeed News, fake news – whether claiming that the Pope had endorsed Trump, or that Clinton sold weapons to Isis – actually outperformed real news on the platform, with more shares, reactions and comments.
The 20 top-performing false election stories generated 8,711,000 shares, reactions, and comments on Facebook, whereas the 20 best-performing election stories from 19 reputable news websites generated 7,367,000 shares, reactions and comments.
In fact, early evidence suggests that the top twenty fake news collectively outperformed the top twenty real news on Facebook in terms of shares, reactions, and comments.
Buzzfeed noted that at key points in the election campaign, the top 20 fake news stories generated 8,711,000 shares, reactions, and comments on Facebook while the top 20 real stories only garnered 7,367,000 shares, reactions, and comments there.
