"reached for comment" is a perfectly acceptable phrase in written English
You would usually use it when discussing an event or situation in which someone made a statement to the media or public but did not wish to be identified. For example, "Representatives for the company have not responded to requests for comment, but a source close to them revealed that they are in talks to merge with another business."
