Frank, taking issue with a recent column of mine in Slate ("Do the Poor Deserve Life Support?"), suggests that helping poor people in the ways poor people prefer to be helped "completely ignores moral emotions like sympathy and empathy".
Re "Weighing the Medical Costs of End-of-Life Care ("Months to Live" series, front page, Dec. 23): How refreshing to read an article challenging the conventional wisdom that the money our society spends on aggressive medical end-of-life care is wasted.
Re "Weighing the End of Life," by Louise Aronson (Sunday Review, Feb. 3): As a nurse practitioner who cares for our elders and has three black Labradors, including one of geriatric age named Golda, I read this article about the end of life for dogs with interest.
