But on Wednesday, Alfred Mutua, the Kenyan government's chief spokesman, revised this rationale, saying the kidnappings were more of a "good launchpad".

"It's a real risky rationale," said George Sansoucy, managing director of Initiative, a media planning and buying agency in New York that has bought space in the magazine.

"We see this tie-up as more of a necessity given a lack of other available partners, rather than any compelling rationale," said Stuart Pearson, at Credit Suisse in London.
