This article describes the rationale, sampling methods and questionnaire content as well as the laboratory methodology.

The seven qualitative studies were high quality with regard to data collection, analysis and reporting; however most lacked a clear theoretical framework; did not address interviewer bias; or provide a rationale for sample size.

Most criteria reflecting the internal validity of studies were met by a majority of studies, with the exception of three internal validity criteria: retention, reporting a rationale for sample size and conducting analyses with consideration for missing data that maintained the fidelity of the randomisation.
