With severe range declines of most of Australia's burrowing mammals, the introduced European rabbit may have replaced the role of native burrowers.
Substantial range declines of the greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) and the burrowing bettong (Bettongia lesueur) are thought to have had dramatic effects on ecosystem processes in the Australian arid zone because of their impacts on surface soils.
If the range declines to 0.1 m, emergent vegetation will be limited to a 4.21 m band, a decline of 48% from the present extent (Figure 4G).
