Randomized trials determine which treatment a given research subject receives based on a random process, not based on clinical judgment of which treatment would be best for that patient.

For example, randomized controlled trial methodology attempts to eliminate the placebo effect, but some researchers have claimed that the placebo effect should be more fully employed in studies of complementary and alternative therapies.
