To that end, I.B.M. last month announced an agreement with Infineon Technologies, a spinoff of Siemens A.G., the German electronics giant, to develop M-RAM products.
The Motorola chip is a demonstration vehicle created in the laboratory to develop the technology to integrate CMOS, the underlying silicon technology, with M-RAM for future products.
Sergio Marchionne, who serves as chief executive of both Chrysler and Fiat, said the turnaround at Chrysler was gaining momentum thanks to solid sales of core products like the Ram pickup and the Jeep Grand Cherokee S.U.V. "We pause for a moment to enjoy our accomplishments," Mr. Marchionne said, "but we will not stop".
Some of Chrysler's key products, like the Dodge Ram pickup and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, are old or are facing increased competition.
Since the minivan arrived, the Chrysler soap opera has included some successful products (like the 1994 Dodge Ram pickup and 2005 Chrysler 300 sedan) and some truly awful ones (the latest Chrysler Sebring convertible).
"The biggest challenge is the infrastructure," Jeff Johnson, a product planning manager for the Ram brand, said in an interview here.
Its big Dodge Ram pickup is one of its most successful products.
"We expect to have M-RAM on the shelf by 2004 if everything goes well," said Dr. Bijan Davari, an I.B.M. fellow and vice president for technology and emerging products, who will oversee how M-RAM is adapted to the marketplace.
The amplitude of the SSC, on the other hand, is largely dependent on the solar wind ram pressure (Gonzalez et al. 1989), a product of the solar wind density and velocity, given by (P = frac{1}{2} rho v^2).
