Peak brightness on a 10% white HDR window measures 815-820 nits with all the different HDR picture preset options bar the Vivid one (which ironically drops down to around 790 nits, presumably because it raises the overall brightness level of the screen, requiring a reduction in the potential brightness of small HDR 'peaks'peaks
This raised the overall brightness level substantially, providing much more of the impact we have come to associate with HDR.
The problem of appearing dark against the sky was explored in the U.S. Navy's Yehudi lights project in 1943, using counter-illumination to raise the average brightness of a plane, when seen head-on, from a dark shape to the same as the sky.
If, for example, you want to use your "Brightness" action but all of your pictures are too dark, you can adjust the "Brightness/Contrast" command to raise the light a little more instead of creating a new action.
