We conservatively estimate that at least 20,800 and 103,000 ha of fallow and rainfed cropland, respectively, could be brought into intensified double cropping using SWI.

We combined these data with georeferenced and temporally explicitly soil and water salinity information, in addition to relative elevation classifications, in order to examine the extent of winter fallows and low productivity rainfed cropland that could be irrigated by small-scale surface water pumps.

Therefore, if 1) the relatively heavy expansion in irrigation capacity that underpins the country scenario's results does not occur as modeled and 2) the greater water shortages on rainfed cropland under the country scenario significantly impairs rainfed cropland productivity then the tradeoff gap between the two scenarios would shrink.

If average annual water yield on a grid cell decreases over time then the cell's expected productivity as given by late 20th century climate patterns may be too high, especially if the cell primarily contains rainfed cropland.

In our analysis we imply that a decline in average annual water yield in an area means that rainfed cropland yields in the area may not increase at the rate of technological growth, all else being equal (in addition, less runoff will be available for irrigation use).

Therefore, our projections for crop production growth may be too high in countries that are projected to expand rainfed cropland area but experience, on average, a decline in annual water availability (the lower right quadrant of the graphs in Figure 3 indicates countries with such a tradeoff).

Based on these data, the study first produced accurate reference cropland layers or RCLs (cropland extent/areas, irrigation versus rainfed, cropping intensities, crop dominance, and croplands versus cropland fallows) for the year 2014 that provided an overall accuracy of around 90% for crop extent in different agro-ecological zones (AEZs).

Of the 260 Mha of net cropland areas cultivated during 2014, 90.6% (236 Mha) was rainfed and just 9.4% (24 Mha) was irrigated.

We define potentially available cropland as the moderately to highly productive land that could be used in the coming years for rainfed farming, with low to moderate capital investments, and that is not under intact mature forests, legally protected, or already intensively managed.
