A series of hydrazide hydrazones, based on a series of 4-substituted benzoic acid, were synthesized, and their structures were elucidated and screened for the antituberculosis activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv with the help of the BACTEC 460 radiometric system.
In conclusion, the M960 system appeared to be accurate and rapid for the recovery of MTB, but reduced recovery of NTM and a high number of contaminated cultures deserve further study in order to assess if this system can represent a valuable alternative to the radiometric system.

In an initial evaluation, we found the Oxoid Signal blood culture system inferior to the BACTEC radiometric system for detection of some microorganisms causing septicemia (M. P. Weinstein, S. Mirrett, and L. B. Reller, J. Clin. Microbiol. 26:962-964, 1988).
To determine whether modified processing of the Oxoid Signal blood culture system could improve its yield and speed of detecting positive cultures relative to the BACTEC radiometric system, we agitated all Oxoid bottles during the first 24 to 48 h of incubation and performed aerobic and anaerobic subcultures of all Oxoid bottles negative after 7 days of incubation.
For isolation of Mycobacterium sp. a radiometric system (BACTEC 460 TB – Becton & Dickinson Diagnostic Instrument Systems, Sparks, MD, USA), and non-radiometric systems (BACTEC 9240 – Becton & Dickinson Diagnostic Instrument Systems, Sparks, MD, USA; and, BacT/Alert 240 – bioMérieux, Marcy-lEtoile, France) were used.
During the study period, the BACTEC 460 radiometric system and the BacTAlert (Organon Teknika, Belgium) blood culture system were used.
Drug susceptibility testing of the M. tuberculosis complex isolates was performed with the rapid BACTEC 460TB radiometric system (Becton Dickinson, Paramus, N.J).
Currently several rapid and automated liquid culture methods such as the BACTEC 460 radiometric system and the MGIT 960 system for diagnosis of MDR-TB [ 6, 7] have been commercialized [ 3].
Susceptibility testing of the initial blood and urine isolates was performed by using the radiometric broth MIC method (Becton Dickinson BACTEC 460 radiometric system; Becton Dickinson Microbiology Systems) and by microbroth dilution method (TREK Diagnostics, Cleveland, OH, USA) for isoniazid and streptomycin.
