So the poll, unlike Whitman chief strategist Mike Murphy's latest non-serious spin -- so reminiscent of his silly spin five years ago on behalf of the obviously failing special election initiatives he was then promoting as he guided Schwarzenegger to a huge defeat -- is quite reality-based.
There was a certain amount of muted humour in Birth, which displayed a Buñuel-like ability to play a zany scenario completely straight (it was co‑written by Buñuel's long-time collaborator, Jean-Claude Carrière), and some verbal slapstick in Sexy Beast, the film that established Glazer as a director specialising in water, long takes and a fragile atmosphere of not-quite-reality.
That indefinable sense of not-quite-reality is, it seems to me, the anxiety that our latter-day amnesia movies are tapping into -- the distant suspicion that in some way our day-to-day lives, our very identities, have been constructed for us, with wholly synthetic materials.
This sense of freedom — for better and worse — is something that often materializes in Crosthwaite's work: intricate black-and-white drawings and paintings that capture not-quite realities inspired by Tijuana's landscape.
They don't quite understand reality.
But the problem with all this is quite simple: reality.
Where would artistic expression — or, quite frankly, reality — be then?
Mr. Ayache's view does fit remarkably well with one quite knowable reality.
