Data collection involved a patient questionnaire (intervention, n = 433 497; control, n = 455 497), a staff questionnaire (intervention, n = 77 76; control, n = 43 56) and structured interviews with managers (n = 8).
Response rates did not differ between the exercise group and the control group: morning questionnaire, intervention group 74.4%, control group 69.4%; evening questionnaire, 69.8% and 70%, respectively.
Information on education, living alone status, and chronic conditions was derived from baseline HRA-O questionnaire (intervention groups: administered at the start of the project after randomisation; control and concurrent comparison groups: administered at the one-year follow-up).
At 12 months, 82% (n = 812) of the total participants were available for follow up and had completed the health service utilization questionnaire (intervention group n = 401, control group n = 411).
