Assignment of these two species can be performed by correlating the EPR data with room temperature H NMR. Zero-field Mössbauer studies of HiPIPs at temperatures above 100 K show a broad quadruple splitting, indicative of fast electronic relaxation, with δ = 0.29 0.33 mm/s and quadruple splitting values of 0.74 0.80 mm/s.
In addition to the visible spectrum, there is paramagnetic doublet with quadruple splitting ~0.67 mm/s.
The hyperfine parameters, isomer shift, quadruple splitting, quadruple shift, and magnetic splitting provide information about the electronic density and its symmetry and also about the magnetic properties of the Fe Mossbauer probe nucleus (Brent Fultz 2011).
The fitted parameters of the spectrum are an isomer shift (IS) of 0.356 ± 0.017 mm/s, quadruple splitting (QS) of 0.62 ± 0.03 mm/s, and an FWHM of 0.565 ± 0.046.
At lower temperature (4.2 K) the spectra show two nonequivalent iron pairs, one of which increases quadruple splitting with increased applied field, whereas the other decreases quadruple splitting.
Cluster I gives an isomer shift of 0.525 mm/s and quadruple splitting of 1.15 mm/s, and cluster II gives 0.47 and 1.35 mm/s, respectively.
The fully oxidized state of the two clusters ([4Fe 4S]2+) gives an isomer shift of 0.35 mm/s and quadruple splitting of 1.10 mm/s.
