The method exploits the existence of different time scales in the electrical discharge to implement a long time-step particle pushing technique both at particle and at mesh levels.
All of them used the pulling technique more often than the pushing technique (Fig. 4; binomial test: AFCor: p < 0.01; AMKor: p < 0.01; AMTho: preference score = 60%%).
Moreover, the majority of animals also scrounged, and scrounging occurred more often when individuals opened the boxes by using the less stable pushing technique.
Individual preferences for the pulling technique tended to be more stable than preferences for the pushing technique, but more individuals tended to switch between exhibiting a preference or no preference.
Individuals of the open group B exhibited a clear preference for the pulling over the pushing technique in comparison with group F (Table 5; GLMM, χ = 5.85, df = 1, p < 0.05).
In the open group B, all 6 subjects performed more pull than push actions (Fig. 5; binomial: BFBor: p < 0.01; BMPan: p = 0.01; BFSip: p < 0.01; BMLab: preference score = 67%%; BMRot: preference score = 100%%; BMRut: preference score = 60%%) and therefore preferred the pulling over the pushing technique (Fig. 5; binomial test: n = 6, p = 0.03).

But while such research is effectively outlawed in the United States and was swiftly condemned by a group of leading researchers, Van Eenennaam and her colleagues are pushing similar techniques into the barnyard.
