She has pursued field work on mice around the country, but whether the habitat is Nebraska or Florida, the technique for capturing a P. polionotus mouse, whether they are studying coat color or tunnel behavior, is the same.
If the student described their motivation to pursue STEM fields of study for the pure fun of it, then it could be concluded that intrinsic process motivation is taking place.
Industry executives said several factors had made the industry reluctant to pursue new fields aggressively.
Technical education can prove valuable even for those students who don't pursue the fields they've studied.
"I would encourage them to pursue other fields where the opportunities are much greater," recommends Stark.
Undergraduates pursue various fields, including accounting and business, computer science and information technology, natural sciences and pre-health professions.
"We're hoping that the students will get that interest or excitement about engineering and science and will pursue those fields," Schwan says.
He says that if people pursue their fields that play to their talents, they'll be able to compete for the top jobs where competition is fierce, even if the industry is diminishing.
But we all don't have someone who encourages and supports us to pursue technical fields.
