Bashir talks about the "external" factors that can lead to pupils feeling more aggrieved and isolated – including discrimination.
But 18% said it was too long, with pupils feeling tired, having difficulty concentrating and even becoming more disruptive.
He appointed independent external judges to decide on admissions, examinations and competitions, a move which enraged faculty members who had given preferential treatment to their private pupils; feeling themselves deprived of a considerable extra income, many of them resigned.
The symptoms that continue over this time are: restlessness; disturbed sleep patterns; abnormal blood pressure and pulse rate; dilated pupils; feeling cold; irritability; change of personality and feeling; as well as an intense craving for the drug.
In attempting to make pupils take part and work at a desirable intensity, the teachers are in fact undermining the pupils' feelings of autonomy and motivation to take part.
"My spaces are dim because low light opens the pupil and then feeling comes out of the eye as touch, a sensuous act," he says.
My fear is that current government policy will seal the mouths of Muslim pupils, leaving them feeling unable to open up for fear of the consequences: a satisfactory outcome for extremists, and nobody else.
