Everyone involved in this year's Armory Show is, naturally, anxious for the art business, against odds, to succeed, as are the participants in several other fairs taking place in the city this weekend: Pulse, Scope, Volta, the Bridge Art Fair, the Pool Art Fair and the Fountain Art Fair.
And I also went to Art Miami, Context, Miami Project, Pulse, Scope, NADA, Untitled, Aqua and others.
Then the satellite fairs, with cool names like "Aqua, Pulse, Scope, Nada," are clustered about thirty minutes away and in general feature younger more emerging artists.
Solo-artist booths, a trend that clearly extended beyond Volta, stood out at both Pulse and Scope.
Much of that embrace has come in the form of the smaller, fringe art, design and photography festivals, including Pulse Miami, Scope, Photo Miami, Design Miami, Aqua Art Miami, the Bridge Art Fair and the New Art Dealers Alliance Art Fair.
With names like Pulse, Seven, Scope, Aqua, Pool and Ink, taken together, some of the remaining fairs could be confused for nightclub listings, and maybe this is fitting given that velvet rope law is absolute in Miami Beach.
PAGE C1 ART FAIRS ADJUST TO THE ECONOMY As a newly sober art world sizes up this weekend's Armory Show, many are wondering about the fates of the concurrent smaller fairs: What prospects do Volta, Pulse and Scope have in a crippled economy?
