Lifetime experiments are designed to demonstrate that MFC with significantly lower ESR enjoy longer pulse lifetime and better pulse handling capability.

Initial results for these in a 33 mm format show gain, imaging performance, pulse shape and lifetime characteristics that are similar to standard glass microchannel plates.

For each analysis, 1000 laser pulses were averaged and sample lifetimes ranged between 280 and 300 μs.
The results of all studies discussed here (pulse characteristics and ESW velocity, lifetime, and size) are compared to in situ measurements previously made on one spacecraft and to theoretical predictions for these quantities, where available.
Notably, a tight inter-pulse spacing would negate the use of most fluorophores, as the fluorescence lifetimes would exceed the inter-pulse spacing and make single-element detection impossible.
