Enron, in effect, was abandoning its roots as an energy provider in favour of becoming a Wall Street trader that just happened to be based in Houston, Texas.Its failure, then, has more in common with that of Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM), a hedge fund run by Nobel prize-winning economists and other geniuses, than with that of PG&E, a California electricity utility that recently went bust.
Abolishing Hefce (the Higher Education Funding Council for England is the only organisation that purely looks after the interest of providers) in favour of establishing an Office for Students is the clearest and most high-profile example.
