"An administrative agency can make mistakes and give protection to marks that shouldn't have been protected," said Roger E. Schechter, professor of law at George Washington University.
"There is a general lack of awareness that these are protected," said Danielle Murray, a spokesman for the Conservation Lands Foundation, which checks on protected land throughout the country.
"They were protected," said Jabouri.
"Our wildlife must be protected," said one of its principal wardens, 48-year-old Tumediso Habala.
"The people are protected," said Sgt. Richard Kemmler, a spokesman for the Police Department.
"The public have a right to know whether they are now adequately protected," said Tyrie.
"What is also needed is the political will to ensure that forests are in fact protected," said Dr. Phalan.
