Deeming the faith an apostasy, Iran's fundamentalist Shiite government has denied Bahais higher education, confiscated Bahai property, desecrated Bahai cemeteries and refused to recognize Bahai marriages.
Here, the complex legal history of land titles and land-use issues -- which can include Spanish and Mexican land grants -- and at times, the clouded ownership status of cemetery property, have made the Legislature reluctant to address cemetery preservation.
Guns are not allowed on the cemetery property.
Jennifer Hoyle, a spokeswoman for the city's law department, said the lawsuit "challenges the city's authority to acquire cemetery property for the airport expansion".
