"There are going to be writers who need to be hired on projects, writers pitching ideas and writers who will write spec scripts.
The money gave Triple Canopy an avenue for more ambitious projects; writers typically come to them with an idea and collaborate with the staff to render it online, a process that can take months.
"People who finance films with sometimes little chance of return, stars who lend their names to projects, writers who take pay cuts in their work in exchange for producing credits are all making a critical contribution," Mr. Stern wrote in an e-mail on Wednesday.
