Onodera (1984) [7] showed the cat's homolog region of the human pNr to consist of the NB and pNr, and demonstrated further that the NB projects to the ventral lamella of the principal olive via the MTT while the pNr projects to the dorsal lamella of the principal olive via the CTT.
When GsbN is expressed in eagle-expressing NBs/neurons (corresponding to NB 6-4 aNB NB 7-3 projectingojecthroughrough PCs, and to NB 2-4 aNB NB 3-3 projectingojecthroughrough ACs), we not only observed a rescue of axonal growth of PCs, but also found that neurons projecting through ACs were fasciculating with the PCs.
The limited number of double-labelled and almost non-existent triple-labelled cells observed suggested that different subpopulations of NB neurons projected to different parts of the auditory cortex, although we found no evidence for a segregation of labelled cells within the NB based on their cortical target.
As non-cholinergic cells in the NB also project to the sensory cortices (Gritti et al., 2003; Hur & Zaborszky, 2005), we explored the distributions of the GAD67- and Pv-immunopositive cells and compared these with that of p75NTR-positive neurons in the NB (Fig. 10).
Moreover, we show that, as in other species, the ME20.4-SAP immunotoxin provides an effective method for selectively eliminating cholinergic neurons that project from the NB to the auditory cortex in ferrets, demonstrating that this approach can be used to investigate the role of cholinergic modulation in cortical processing and plasticity.
