It has been reported in educational research literature that, based on experience of project-based teaching of bioinformatics within a cell biology course, the involvement of faculty with experience in pedagogy of different disciplines is recommended (Honts, 2003).
My own belief is that less reliance on testing and more focus on project-based learning that sees assessment as a pedagogy which helps learners reflect on the learning and application would be a step in the right direction.
As we started to tell the stories of what happened at Olin (www.olin.edu) and iFoundry (www.ifoundry.illinois.edu), we started to recognize that the usual rational code words used to describe educational reform (content, curriculum, pedagogy, learning outcomes, active learning, project-based learning, etc., etc).
The supervisors interviewed in our study adopted many of these roles and strategies, moving towards a participatory pedagogy and a more collaborative and project-based approach to the supervision process.

The SLATE project was based on the previous work conducted within the Sydney School's genre-based pedagogy, which integrated SFL-inspired genre theory (Martin & Rose, 2008), sociology of education (Bernstein, 1975) and sociocultural theory (Vygotsky, 1978), and applied these insights into an online teaching/learning environment.
