Phenotypic assays such as motility and adhesiveness, and genotyping for the exoU gene could provide a significant prognostic input to identify multi-drug resistant P. aeruginosa strains most likely to place patients at risk for lethal gut-derived sepsis.
Patient 2 (9.1kb mitochondrial DNA deletion) shows a rapid progression despite a low level of mitochondrial DNA heteroplasmy (37% mitochondrial DNA deletion load), on account of the exceptionally large mitochondrial DNA deletion, whereas Patient 1 demonstrates that even a single NMDAS score can represent a useful prognostic input.
