Any unintended deviation from professional or regulatory references, or guidelines affecting dispensing procedures, was also considered a dispensing error.
Most were women (84.0%) and nurses (90.6%), and the number of years as healthcare professionals (mean ± standard deviation) was 13.9 ± 10.0 (median 12, interquartile range 5 20).
We do find, however, that the strongest espoused deviation from core professional values and logics has occurred in traditional work contexts (i.e. public accounting firms), and for the distinctive value of commitment to independence enforcement, the deviation is most pronounced in the elite core of the profession – the Big Four professional service firms.
Non-compliance to guidelines (35%) and deviation from usual professional care (41%) were the most frequent SSF.
Participants were mostly women (63.6%), had a Bachelor's degree as their physiotherapy diploma (92.4%), and had 13.3 ± 9.8 (mean ± standard deviation) years of professional experience.
In 35% of the cases these were related to non-compliance with guidelines or missing appropriate local protocols and in 41% they implied deviation from usual professional care (table 3).
Examples of deviation from usual professional care are: no fetal monitoring in case of vaginal blood loss, no consultation or action undertaken in case of decreased fetal movements, no further diagnosis and/or action in case of presumed growth restriction and insufficient documentation in the medical records (medication, diagnostic considerations and policy).
Much of the subsequent work has been devoted to describing deviations from the professional partnership form, identifying alternative archetypes such as the corporate managed professional business form (Hinings et al. 1999; Morris and Pinnington 1999; Pinnington and Morris 2002) or the Global Professional Network (Brock, Powell and Hinings 1999b; Brock et al. 2007).
