The target nucleus and the product nucleus are isotopes, or forms of the same element.
If neutrons are added to a stable nucleus, it is not long before the product nucleus becomes unstable and the neutron is converted into a proton.
A typical nuclear reaction involves two reacting particles a heavy target nucleus and a light bombarding particle and produces two new particles a heavier product nucleus and a lighter ejected particle.
The product nucleus is occasionally much lighter than the target nucleus; chlorine-38, for example, has been produced along with an assortment of neutrons, protons, and alpha particles (helium nuclei) by bombarding copper-63 with protons accelerated to 70 MeV.
When the target nucleus is struck by a heavy-ion projectile, the product nucleus recoils out of the very thin target and is either attracted to a substrate by an electrostatic potential or is swept onto a substrate by a jet of helium gas.
Spallation, high-energy nuclear reaction in which a target nucleus struck by an incident (bombarding) particle of energy greater than about 50 million electron volts (MeV) ejects numerous lighter particles and becomes a product nucleus correspondingly lighter than the original nucleus.

In the first observed nuclear reaction (1919), Ernest Rutherford bombarded nitrogen with alpha particles and identified the ejected lighter particles as hydrogen nuclei or protons (11H or p) and the product nuclei as a rare oxygen isotope.
When two light nuclear particles combine or "fuse" together, energy is released because the product nuclei have less mass than the original particles.
If two meiotic product nuclei fused at random, and half of these were inversion heterozygotes, it could explain the percentage of eggs surviving to adulthood.
This strategy may be feasible because it is known that filamin-A proteolysis by calpains is regulated by AKT-dependent phosphorylation at serine 2152 [ 139], and treatment with PI3K inhibitor that abrogates AKT activity induces filamin-A cleavage and localization of the cleavage product into nucleus [ 140].
Since the main localization of these gene products is nucleus, their function may be related to the formation of nuclear inclusions.
