A crucial requirement for processing regularities (e.g., in speech streams) is the ability to perceive and represent relationships between elements separated in space and time (Gebhart et al. 2009; Newport and Aslin 2004; van Heugten and Shi 2010).
In sum, our results show that one crucial requirement for processing regularities, namely the ability to understand and represent relationships between elements separated in space and time (Gebhart et al. 2009; Newport and Aslin 2004; van Heugten and Shi 2010), is also present in one of humans' closest living relative, the chimpanzee.
