Various types of extrusion processes have been studied for the pretreatment of biomass and the extrusion pretreatment is considered as a promising technology for biomass conversion to ethanol production in recent studies [ 13]. Lee SH, Teramoto Y and Endo T [ 14] used a batch-type kneader with twin-screw elements in conjunction with hot water process for pretreatment of woody biomass.
Existing technologies typically employ thermochemical processes for biomass pretreatment to break down the barriers formed by lignin and lignin-hemicellulose association.
In one of the most widely investigated process options for pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulosic biomass, pretreatment with dilute sulfuric acid is used to solubilize hemicellulosic sugars and increase the reactivity of the remaining insoluble lignocellulosic solids to enzymatic digestion, and cellulase enzymes are then used to hydrolyze the cellulose to fermentable glucose [ 4- 6].
Tween 40 was used as an additive in different processes, for example, LHW pretreatment, S-SSF, or as a single pretreatment stage to treat WIS in this study, and the effect of different pretreatment methods of Tween 40 on ethanol concentration using unwashed and washed WIS as substrates is shown in Figure 1.
Air stripping of ammonia is a widely used process for the pretreatment of wastewater.
