The 1695 printing of Mary Astell's rare and radical text A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, for the Advancement of Their True and Greatest Interest, calls for formal education for women and sits alongside a prized first edition of Mary Wollstonecraft's 1792 A Vindication of the Rights of Women, donated by the film director and feminist Jill Craigie.
Another release made desirable by its exclusive distribution at a high-scoring tournament, the disk inside the Bangai-O Prize Edition for Dreamcast packaging contains a game identical to the widely available standard release.
In her bag was the manuscript of a first novel that was to make her famous and (by the standards of writers) rich, and though some of that future could have been predicted (the manuscript had caused a stir among publishers), no one could have foreseen the Booker prize and editions in 40 languages.
First editions are now rare and highly prized.
