* Ginger Taylor, associate strategist on the General Electric account at OMD, New York, a media services unit of the Omnicom Group, was named print director to lead a new unit dedicated to the consumer print buying business of Johnson & Johnson.
"The category as a whole is so crowded," said Kelly Foster, senior partner and print director at MindShare North America, a media planning and buying agency that is part of the WPP Group, adding that the magazines "get in each other's way".
The son of a printing company director, he began a career in social and health insurance, and socio-economic policy brought him into politics, as a speech-writer for the Dutch Liberal Party VVDD).
At Jack Spade that meant bags bearing a navy-blue-and-white grid print inspired by aerial maps of New York City, and at Perry Ellis a runway full of prints creative director Michael Maccari said were inspired by the architectural grid of New York City.
"There's something about a new magazine that advertisers find exciting," said Roberta Garfinkle, senior vice president and print media director at McCann-Erickson Worldwide AdvertisiNew Yorkw York.
"You see men embracing magazines more," said Melissa Pordy, senior vice president and print services director at Zenith Media in New York, a joint venture of the Cordiant Communications Group and Saatchi & Saatchi that buys ad space and commercial time for major marketers.
Newspapers "have been trying to crack that nut for years," said Roberta Garfinkle, senior vice president and print media director at the New York office of McCann-Erickson Worldwide Advertistill "anobodyll nobody has come up with a way to do it".
"If you can pull them off, they are a license to print money," says director Michael Apted.
This is a new 35-millimeter print of the director's cut, so maybe now it will all make sense.
George Goldner, who in 1993 left the Getty Institute to come to the Met as curator of Drawings and Prints, was named director of the Ashmolean Museum, in Oxford, England, last December.
