In our particular case, we suggest that the MCE arises earlier in the case of repeated primes than novel primes because repeated primes map onto two independent types of representations – one central and one peripheral – each of which is associated with a separate distribution of access times.
In each block of 40 trials, the critical targets were presented 4 times, once with each prime type (novel congruent, novel incongruent, repeated congruent, repeated incongruent), for a total of 32 critical (analyzed) trials per block.
