The Montclair Museum will reopen in the fall with "Primal Visions: Albert Bierstadt Discovers AmericacAlbert Bierstadt Discovers America
Through Feb. 3, "Primal Visions: Albert Bierstadt Discovers Americaca, 1859-1893" presomes some 50 paintings, prints and photographs by Bierstadt and contemporaries like Frederic Edwin Church and Eadweard Muybridge.
THE remodeled and enlarged Montclair Art Museum has opened its special exhibitions galley with an ambitious show, "Primal Visions: Albert Bierstadt Discovers Americaca," whose theme incorporates the idea of new beginnings.
The wing will open first with a reception for museum members on Nov. 17, and a preview of "Primal Visions: Albert Bierstadt Discovers Americaca," which is to run through Feb. 3, 2002.
For evidence of this, one need look no further than this highly specialized cheetah made by Primal Visions, which features an arduino system that moves the eyes and mouth, and triggers growls based on bio-feedback.
The film was based on his book "The Primal Mind: Vision and Reality in Indian America".
The division between the village and the city, between local ideas and the colonial heritage, is the trilogy's intellectual theme, which Ray develops into a grand and powerful synthesis — a primal, hieratic vision joined to a worldly open-mindedness.
While the painting seems to express an Arcadian vision of primal innocence, it could also be a wry comment on the rise of tourism in the south.
With consumerism's sticky web of endless desires seemingly stretched over every facet of life, his vision of how primal urges are displaced into the world around us seems ripe for reassessment.
