By decomposing price dispersions into two factors, the dynamic pricing intensity and dispersion, we can reconcile our empirical findings with both of the main theories on price dispersion.
When the newcomer is a traditional carrier, we find a larger and statistically more significant decrease of dynamic pricing intensity after entry, proportionally to the number of new offered seats.
We analyze the fare response in three dimensions: the average fare offered up to 90 days before departure, the dynamic pricing intensity, and the price dispersion, the latter defined as the daily adjustments relative to the predicted temporal fare curve.
