LONDON — Credit Suisse shook the markets on Tuesday when it announced that pricing errors by traders on asset-backed securities would result in write-downs of $2.85 billion.
The regulator ruled that the bank had failed to create adequate controls to avoid pricing errors, and that once they occurred, had failed to detect them in time.
Credit Suisse said its internal review had "identified mismarkings and pricing errors by a small number of traders in certain positions in our structured credit trading business ".
In February, the bank shocked markets by writing down $2.85 billion in asset-backed investments and suspending some traders after finding pricing errors on its books.
The losses tied to the pricing errors were a major embarrassment for Credit Suisse, which performed better than most of its competitors during the credit crisis.
