And on Coltrane's early Prestige recordings as leader, starting in 1957, all of which are available separately and collected on "John Coltrane: The Prestige Recordings," he is gradually making public his hunger for harmonic investigation; the sidelong "Sweet Sapphire Blues" on "Black Pearls" from 1958 bears this out.

Another significant component of the Rudolf Kurz collection is jazz recordings, here including Verve label recordings with slipcases illustrated by David Stone Martin (who was influenced by the social realist art of the New Deal) as well as Blue Note and Prestige recordings whose cover designs reflected the increased recognition of jazz as a serious, influential art form.

He returned to the South in 1959-60 to make the first stereo field recordings of American music; 19 albums were released on Atlantic and Prestige Records, including the first recordings by the country bluesman Mississippi Fred McDowell.

Pressure wire recordings were made using the Pressure Wire Aeris (St . Jude Medical Minneapolis, Minnesota) and Prestige pressure guide wire (Volcano Corporation, San Diego, California).
Some of his recordings came out on small labels: five albums of Indianapolis blues for Prestige, and one of coastal slave shouts for Folkways, among others.
