They have two distinct parts and secrete at least eight hormones regulating growth, fertility, breast milk production, blood pressure, contractions during childbirth, temperature and water balance.
Using curarized animals, Miller and others made the rewarding stimulation contingent on such typically involuntary responses as changes in heart rate, blood pressure, contractions of the bowel, and salivation.

We hypothesise that the reservoir is emptied by increase of body pressure (by contraction of intersegmental muscles), and the tentorial-fontanellar muscles prevent the plugging of the fontanelle by the secretory epithelium due to the increase of pressure, by stretching the epithelium downwards (see Fig. 2E).
