If architectural coherence is to be preserved, building envelopes cannot simply be covered with black panels with visible cells and contact bars.
It forms part of a now mostly ruined castle known as Asen's Fortress, of which the church is the best preserved building.

Stephen Albert, the principal architect at the Albert Group Architects, which is designing the building that may one day replace the theater, points out that city and state preservation laws have been written specifically to preserve buildings, rather than ideas.
"It is of enormous importance to us that landlords make infrastructure improvement to preserve buildings at least for another generation," she said.
Jim Thomas, who is fighting a huge blaze to the north of Boise, says it is much easier to preserve buildings these days, thanks to improved chemical foams and fire-retardant wrapping, which resembles tin foil.
"We must be able to have the tolerance, to be able to have people say what they want anytime they want," said Mohammed Awad, an architect who has worked to preserve buildings from the city's cosmopolitan past.
"It is important to preserve buildings and keep an eye on architecture and history, but stores and people and businesses come and go, and there is not much you can do about it".
